WANT TO HELP? GIVE INFO

Roanoke Police Chief M. David Hooper said citizens can help the police more by providing information than by trying to help them search for Scottie Wimmer.

But Hooper said he appreciates the efforts of many citizens who helped comb the boy's neighborhood Thursday night and Friday.

"It's the kind of thing that touches a lot of people, ' Hooper said. "The best in them has surfaced, and we appreciate it."

Hooper is concerned that civilian searchers may destroy vital evidence needed by police to construct a criminal case, if necessary.

"I feel at this point, we are not ready for that type of search," he said. "We appreciate any information that they have or feel like they have. There is no information that is too insignificant or too small."
