MAROONS ELIMINATED 69-60 IN DIVISION III SECTIONAL PLAY

Roanoke College committed 19 second-half turnovers and shot 24 percent from the field Friday in dropping a 69-60 decision to Alma (Mich.) in the semifinals of the Division III Great Lakes Sectional women's basketball tournament in Eau Claire, Wis.

The Scots (21-3) play Wisconsin-Eau Claire (23-4), a 90-74 winner over Christopher Newport, in the sectional final at 7:30 tonight. The winner advances to the national semifinals on March 20.

Roanoke (24-4) led 32-31 at halftime but managed just two field goals over the first 10:53 of the second half as the Scots outscored the Maroons 15-4.

Alma's Katie Mans scored eight of her 17 points during that run to help the Scots build a 46-36 lead with 9:21 remaining.

The Maroons got no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Roanoke's Kay Caldwell hit a layup to pull the Maroons to 46-38, but Alma went on another run, outscoring the Maroons 14-5 over the next five minutes to build its biggest lead 60-43 with 4:19 to go.

Roanoke committed 32 turnovers for the game and shot 33 percent from the field (22-for-67). Alma hit 24 of 43 free-throw attempts, and the Maroons committed 31 fouls. Kristie Jones fouled out for Roanoke and four others finished with four fouls each.

Senior forward Donna Cogar led Roanoke with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Caldwell added 12 points for the Maroons, while senior forward Jenn Jones had eight points and 11 rebounds.

Colleen Wruble paced three Scots in double figures with 19 points. Katie Mans added 17.

It was the second straight year the Maroons were eliminated in the sectional tournament. \
