Authorities said the incident apparently stemmed from the girl's refusal to date one of the suspects, identified as Kevin Lee Lemons, 19, of Rocky Mount.
Lemons is the son of Lt. Roy Lemons of the Rocky Mount Police Department.
"She was not taking any phone calls from him," said Franklin County Sheriff's Capt. W.Q. "Bill" Overton Jr. "They said they only wanted to talk to her."
Overton gave the following account:
The girl and two younger cousins were waiting for the bus on Virginia 767 near the Ferrum community around 8 a.m. when three men wearing stocking masks pulled up in a car.
The men - one of whom carried a pistol - ordered them into the car. The children ran, but the girl did as she was told.
The girl, a student at Franklin County High School, struggled with the captors as the car pulled away and managed to open a door. The driver stopped, enabling the girl to escape.
A short time later, Sheriff's Investigator Ray Hundley stopped a vehicle on Virginia 40 matching a description given by the cousins. The officer received permission to search the car and found three stockings and a .22-caliber revolver.
The three men each were charged with abduction, use of a firearm during a felony and two counts each of attempted abduction.
The men, all from Franklin County, were identified as: Brian Scott Everest, 20; Perry Lewis St. Jacques, 18; and Lemons. They were held Friday at the Franklin County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 bond each.
