CHRISTLEY, JAMES M., SR. James Monroe Christley, Sr., of Roanoke Co., died
March 14, 1992 in a local hospital. He was born February 20, 1912 to William
Gilford Christley and Ivy Mae Ferguson Christley. He graduated from Back Creek
High School and lived with his parents on the farm until he left to take a job
with the Greyhound Bus Company, where he was a driver for 18 years. During
this time he met and married Pauline Ann Martin. They have one son, James
Monroe Christley, Jr. When Mr. Christley left Greyhound, he went to work for
Carter Machinery Company, Salem, Va. He had a number of responsibilities while
working there 28 years. He had been retired for a good many years and his
hobby was antique cars. Mr. Christley belonged to the Antique Automobile Club
and won many trophies and ribbons at the different shows. He was a member of
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for most of his life.
Surviving are his wife, Pauline Ann Martin Christley; son, James Monroe
Christley, Jr., Roanoke; one granddaughter, Kathy Christley, Glen Burnie, Md.;
one great-grandchild; four sisters, Glenna C. Millward, Grantsville, Utah;
Elsie C. Barruss, Logan, Utah; Bertha C. Fisher, Grantsville, Utah; Louise C.
Williams, Grantsville, Utah; four brothers, Milan H. Christley, Salem; Arlen
F. (Pete) Christley, Roanoke; William G. Christley, Jr., Richmond, Utah;
Melvin G. Christley, Corvallis, Mont.; two sisters-in-law, Leona Dooley,
Roanoke; Hazel Sagabart, Portsmouth; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral
services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel 1:00 p.m. Thursday with Bishop
Al Cooper officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park.
Friends may call at Oakey's South Chapel from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to
9:00 p.m. Wednesday.
