FOOTBALL ASSISTANT LEAVING TECH FOR KENT

Denie Marie, a volunteer assistant coach on Virginia Tech's football staff for the past three years, will leave in April to become recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach at Kent University.

NCAA cutbacks have eliminated the volunteer coaching position, and Marie, 49, was not offered a full-time assistant's position by Beamer. Beamer had been looking into creating an administrative position for Marie, who helped coach wide receivers at Tech. Instead Marie will become Kent's first recruiting coordinator.

"This is the opportunity I wanted," Marie said of the Kent job. "I want to pursue my career on the field as a coach. It's a great move for me career-wise."

Marie a native of Westerly, R.I., will work for second-year Kent coach Pete Cordelli. Kent, formerly known as Kent State, competes in the Mid-American Conference.
