MONTVALE - Ollie Maye Freeman Hamm (Mrs. Eli W.), age 84 of Montvale, died Sunday morning, March 22, 1992, at the home of her daughter in Dale City, Va. She was born at Seven Mile Ford in Smyth County on July 4, 1907, to Thomas K. and Mary Snow Freeman. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Billie Jean Hamm Weeks; and nine brothers. Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Hamm Taurus, Dale City and Troy, Mich.; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas F. and Arlene J. Hamm, Cheyenne, Wyo.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey T. Weeks, Atlanta, Ga.; Kimberly Weeks Lipscomb, Bedford, Va.; Thomas F. Hamm, II, Laramie, Wyo.; Michael K. Hamm and wife, Nan, Annapolis, Md.; two great-grandchildren, Jill Lipscomb and Christopher Hamm; six nieces; ten nephews; and numerous cousins. Educated in Smyth County Schools, Marion Junior College, Radford College and VPI, she was retired after 33 years of teaching in both the elementary and senior high schools of Smyth and Bedford Counties. She was a member of the VEA, NEA, Bedford County Retired Teachers, William R. Terry Chapter of the UDC and Montvale Community Center. She had been a member of the Montvale Presbyterian Church for 55 years and, until declining health in recent years, remained active in her church and other civic and community affairs. She was a published author completing "From Indian Trails to Skyways," a history of the Montvale area, prior to the community's centennial celebration in 1990. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford. Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. N. C. Napier at the family plot in the Montvale Presbyterian Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., Thursday.
