3 COMPANIES WIN DEVELOPMENT AWARDS

Biological Monitoring Inc. of Blacksburg, Darco Southern Inc. of Independence and Virginia Power of Richmond - were among the 24 finalists in Southern Growth Policies Board competition.

They will receive recognition certificates in the Governor's Cup Awards and automatic selection for next year's competition. They were cited for their contributions to economic development.

Biological Monitoring was recognized for an innovative approach to monitoring water quality and company participation in waste-management and emergency response committees.

Darco was cited for developing products that replace asbestos, effective entry into export marketing and establishment of the Blue Ridge World Trade Association.

Virginia Power was commended for community service and volunteer programs, environmental projects and economic development activities. - Staff report
