VIRGINIA UNION ROMPS 81-69

Walter Hurd scored 11 points and forced two turnovers in the final five minutes, sparking Virginia Union to an 81-69 quarterfinal victory over Kentucky Wesleyan in the NCAA Division II basketball tournament Thursday.

Virginia Union, which next plays Bakersfield State, let a 13-point first-half lead drop to 62-59 when Herb Arnarson made a 10-footer for Kentucky Wesleyan with 4:52 left.

Aaron Gosa then hit a free throw for Virginia Union, and Hurd, held to two points in the first half, sank a 3-pointer.

Virginia Union (28-3) was led by Tim Davis with 16 points.
