ARSENAL INCINERATOR DEBATE MONDAY

The New River Valley Environmental Coalition is sponsoring a public debate Monday on a proposed hazardous-waste incinerator at the Radford Arsenal. The debate, "Incinerator 2000: Friend or Foe," will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Museum of Natural History, 428 N. Main St.

Arsenal and Army officials are proposing an incinerator that would burn the plant's scrap propellant, classified as hazardous waste, along with New River Valley municipal garbage. No local government has agreed to the project, but none has dismissed the idea.

Project engineer Chip Batton will debate Pete Castelli, regional coordinator for the Citizens Clearinghouse for Hazardous Wastes and outspoken critic of incineration as a means of waste disposal.
