NAMES & CHANGES

Treasurer named at NS

WILLIAM J. ROMIG has been named vice president and treasurer of Norfolk Southern Corp. He succeeds THOMAS H. KERWIN who retired this month after more than 20 years with the company.

Romig joined Norfolk and Western Railway, a Norfolk Southern predecessor, in 1977 as director of operating systems in Roanoke. He became assistant vice president of N&W's management information department in 1980.

In 1982 he was named assistant vice president/costs and insurance for Norfolk Southern and moved to the corporate headquarters in Norfolk. In 1983 he became assistant vice president/finance.

ADVERTISING

The Jack Smith Agency has announced several additions to its staff.

\ WILLIAM O'CONNER has been named executive vice president. He will be responsible for all international and United States business-to-business accounts and also will function as an account supervisor for several accounts. He previously was director of marketing and communication for Medeco Locks in Salem.

\ BETSY SMITH has been named vice president of account services. She will oversee all business-to-business and retail accounts. Prior to joining the agency, she was employed by USAir.

\ KERRY BALKUS has joined the agency as financial director. She will be in charge of daily accounting services and long-term financial planning. She formerly was employed by USAir.

\ KELLEY IRISH has been appointed production manager. Her responsibilities include tracking and cost analysis for all creative work produced by the agency. She formerly was with IBM of North America.

BANKING

\ R. BRUCE VALLEY, W. CHRISTOPHER BEELER JR. and RALEIGH M. COOLEY, have been appointed to the board of directors of Piedmont BankGroup in Martinsville. Valley is a senior vice president of administration for Piedmont Trust Bank and treasurer of Piedmont BankGroup Inc. Beeler is president and chief operating officer of Virginia Mirror Co. and Virginia Glass Products Corp. Cooley is a partner in Compton and Cooley, a Hillsville law firm.

\ ROBERT P. MARTIN has joined Crestar Bank as vice president and commercial account manager in its "lower market" business unit. He formerly was a vice president and commercial account officer with Dominion Bank.

\ BRENDA L. VAUGHN has been promoted to vice president at Dominion Bankshares Corp. She is manager of the Blue Ridge regional credit analysis department. She is responsible for the credit analysis of commercial loan requests in the region and for providing credit information about commercial customers. She also coordinates industry research and assists in credit training.

COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES

\ MITCHELL L. MOORE, director of major gifts and director of the metropolitan Richmond campaign at the University of Richmond, has been named vice president for development at Sweet Briar College in Amherst County. He will be responsible for leading and managing development and public relations, including organizing and managing all aspects of fund raising for the college.

FINANCIAL SERVICES

\ RYLAND H. HUBBARD JR. has been promoted to assistant vice president and resident manager of the Roanoke office of Merrill Lynch Co. He has been a financial consultant with the company for eight years.

\ LINDSEY QUESINBERRY has been appointed an investment vice president with J.C. Bradford & Co. He is a retail broker with the firm.

\ MANUFACTURING

\ RICHARD M. DORTCH has been promoted to director of design for the contract division of American of Martinsville. He will be responsible for all project management efforts; the computer assisted design department; design; and coordination of new product designs of the hospitality, government/university and health care divisions.

\ STEVE STANDIFER has been named general manager of Virginia House Furniture Corp in Atkins. He replaces RANDALL SPARGER, who is retiring. He previously was a plant manager with Ethan Allen, Singer and Kincaid.

\ SAMUEL E. SPRINKLE III has been promoted to maintenance superintendent at Roanoke Cement Co. in Botetourt County. An employee for 37 years, he most recently was maintenance supervisor.

\ JOHN M. DARDEN III, formerly of Roanoke, has been named to the board of directors of Fuqua Industries Inc. of Atlanta. He is president and chief executive officer of Sands & Co. Inc. in Atlanta.

\ JOHN A. LUKE JR. has been named president and chief executive officer of Westvaco Corp. He replaces his father, JOHN A. LUKE, who will retire Nov. 1 after 43 years with the company.

The younger Luke started with Westvaco in 1979 in its New York headquarters. He served as a corporate associate in Westvaco's Covington offices in 1980. From 1983 to 1987, he was treasurer of the company. He was elected a director of the organization in 1989 and has been executive vice president since 1990.

\ ORGANIZATIONS

RETAIL

\ JOHN W. ADAMS has been appointed personnel manager at Nationwide Homes in Martinsville. A Nationwide employee for 19 years, he has been accounting manager, credit and collections manager and assistant corporate secretary.
