Worth's letter to County Administrator Betty Thomas was accompanied by letters of recommendation from current and former county officials.
"Our children need to learn what it will take to survive in a very complex and competitive society," Worth wrote. "Simple things like human values, personal finance, respect for others, are just a few of the basics we need to emphasize."
Circuit Court Clerk Allan Burke, Sheriff Ken Phipps, Treasurer Ellis Meredith and Chief Deputy Sheriff Roy Bolen, all Republicans, asked the supervisors to consider Worth for the District D seat.
Former School Superintendent Arnold Saari, who ran unsuccessfully for county treasurer as a Democrat last fall, also wrote a letter on Worth's behalf.
Two candidates now have announced for the District D seat. The other is Michael Etgen of Christiansburg, an employee of Volvo-GM in Dublin. The seat is held by Michael Sowder of Riner, who has not told the board yet whether he would like to be reappointed when his term expires June 30.
Worth, 36, is a water plant operator at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. He has an 8-year-old daughter who attends Christiansburg Primary School.
He currently is a vice president of the taxpayers' association, and is a member of the PTA and the Christiansburg Ruritan Club.
The District A seat also will become vacant June 30.
Annette Perkins, a retired Blacksburg teacher who holds that seat, has told the supervisors she would like to be reappointed. Former School Board Member Robert Anderson also has applied for the seat.
Applications for appointment to the School Board are due in the county administrator's office by April 15.
