FEW HAZARDOUS WASTE SITES BEING CLEANED UP
Nearly a decade after the government launched a program to make sure thousands of industrial sites do not leak hazardous waste, only a fraction have begun cleanup efforts, the General Accounting Office says.Of 3,400 businesses suspected of leaking toxic waste, only 43 had "comprehensive cleanup" measures in place, the GAO found. A total of 185 had begun some sort of cleanup efforts to reduce the threat - such as fencing off a contaminated area. But only 12 had completed the cleanup process as of last June.
