DIABETES RESEARCHERS ISOLATE GENE MUTATIONS
Researchers have found that there are at least 23 types of mutations of a single gene that can lead to development of type II diabetes, a disease that usually strikes children.Dr. Simon Pilkis of the State University of New York at Stony Brook said the mutations have been found in genetic testing of families in France, Sweden and America that have members with a form of the type II diabetes. A report on the research is to be published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Diabetes is a disease where patients are unable to metabolize sugar, or glucose, in the blood. It can lead to serious side effects, including blindness, kidney failure and amputation of lower limbs.
