OBIT MAYFIELD, SHIRLEY A., ("SAM")
MAYFIELD, Shirley A., ("Sam"), 80, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday,
February 27, 1993. He was a member of Belmont Baptist Church, the Civitan
Club, Lakeland Lodge #190 AF&AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies and Kazim Shrine
Temple. Mr. Mayfield served during World War II as a lieutenant in the 94th
Infantry Division European Theatre of Operations, and was a retired captain
from the U. S. Army Reserve. He retired from the Veterans Administration in
1974, serving in both Salem, Va. and Salisbury, N. C. Surviving are his wife,
Virginia Rothwell Mayfield; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald L. and Elsie
C. Mayfield, Vinton; a sister and brother-in-law, Etta M. and John Lane,
Roanoke; a sister-in-law, Grace C. Mayfield, Roanoke; four nephews, Charles L.
Hough, Lynchburg, Melvin L. Mayfield, Roanoke, Ronald L. Mayfield Jr., Vinton,
David W. Mayfield, Knoxville, Tenn.; three nieces, Sherry M. Griffith,
Roanoke, Janet L. Low, Springfield, Va. and Nancy L. Becker, Hickory, N. C.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday from Oakey's Roanoke
Chapel with interment following in Sherwood Burial Park. In lieu of flowers,
the family suggest memorial contributions be made to Belmont Baptist Church
(825 Stewart Ave., S.E., Roanoke, Va. 24013). Friends may call at Oakey's
Roanoke, where the family will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.
