TEACHER OF THE WEEK
It's "marvelous," says Rose Hackley-Hale," to "see children pick up a book and read on their own. You have to read to be able to do anything, so I try to make it interesting," she said. One of the tools Hackley-Hale uses to teach her pupils at the Fairview Magnet School of Plants and Animals in Roanoke is to have them "become" characters in books they are reading. She then asks the pupils to give a different version of how their character would act in a particular situation. This stimulates the children's creativity and allows the stories to take some interesting turns, she said.
Hackley-Hale has taught first, second and third grades, but it's third she likes best. "The children are old enough to learn and young enough to be lovable," she said. "She is a very good teacher, who always smiles even if she has had a bad day," said her nominator.
Married and the mother of a high school senior, Hackley-Hale is a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher and active in other church and community activities.
