Hollins hosts classics symposium

Hollins College's annual Classics Symposium will be held Wednesday and Thursday in the college's Babcock Auditorium of the Dana Science Building.

Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. Hollins Professor of Classics Anne Laidlaw will discuss "Schliemann and the Myths: The Early Excavations." On Thursday at 4:30 p.m., Brian Rose of the University of Cincinnati's department of classics discusses "Greco-Roman Troy: The Modern Excavations." A reception will follow Rose's talk in the Green Drawing Room in Main Building.

Lakota on stage

Kevin Locke will present an evening of Lakota music, dance and oratory tonight at 8 in Roanoke College's Olin Theater in Salem.

Locke is a lecturer and consultant on American Indian values, belief systems, social structures and education. He has performed in several movies, including "Dances with Wolves."

Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for senior citizens and students. For reservations, call 375-2333 from 3 to 6 p.m.

Media critic

Journalist and critic Salim Muwakkil will speak on "Distorted Images: African Americans and the Mass Media" at 7:30 Wednesday night in Heth Ballroom on the Radford University campus.

Muwakkil is senior editor of In These Times, a national bi-weekly news magazine, and an instructor at the Associated Colleges in Chicago, Ill.

His essays on black-American politics and culture have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and other publications.

Poetry reading

The Roanoke City Main Library on South Jefferson Street will host an afternoon of readings by area poets Sunday from 2:30 to 4:30 in the Brody Room.

Sponsors are the American Association of University Women, the National Association of American Pen Women, the Writer's Club of Virginia and the Poetry Society of Virginia.
