MAN FACES CHARGE IN CRASH
A Vinton man who authorities said tried to outrun a train in his pickup truck was charged Monday with involuntary manslaughter in connection with a collision that killed a passenger in his truck.Michael Glenn Reeves Jr., 22, was indicted by a grand jury in Roanoke Circuit Court.
The grand jury also indicted Reeves on a charge of driving under the influence on the night of last Dec. 23.
Don Piedmont, director of public relations for Norfolk Southern Corp., said after the accident that Reeves drove his pickup alongside a train on a Roanoke street that paralleled the railroad tracks, then tried to beat the coal train to a crossing by driving around the lowered gates.
The train hit the truck at the crossing at Hollins Road Northeast, near the railroad's East End Shops.
Dennis James Wright, 39, of Roanoke, was killed in the accident. Both Reeves and another passenger sustained injuries that required hospitalization.
The train, which was going 28 mph in a 45-mph speed limit area, pushed the truck 1,250 feet down the tracks before it stopped.
