BALILES PROPOSED AS HEAD OF PUBLIC TV

Former Virginia Gov. Gerald Baliles has been nominated to head the Public Broadcasting Service.

The PBS members nominating committee suggested Baliles, a Richmond lawyer, for the nonpaying position. Baliles has been a member of PBS' 35-member board of directors since 1982.

The board will vote on the nomination in June. Baliles would succeed Ted R. Capener, vice president of university relations at the University of Utah.

PBS is a private, nonprofit corporation serving 346 public television stations.
