WHERE ARE THE ZEBRA MUSSELS?
WELL, FOLKS, Kit Kiser, Roanoke director of operations and utilities, did it despite the outcry of the citizens, sportsmen, boaters, fishermen and nature lovers!
He has placed unwarranted restrictions on the public's use at Carvin's Cove for recreational activities.
Despite the fact that no zebra mussels have ever been found in Virginia, Kiser has reduced the hours you may fish instead of lengthening them.
He has outlawed boaters from Franklin, Craig, Montgomery, Henry and 90 other Virginia counties.
He has closed the cove to all boaters Monday through Wednesday from Nov. 1 through March 31.
He has raised the annual landing fee for boats to the outrageous price of $75.
He has hired a boat inspector at $18,000 per year and plans to hire four assistants to help him.
By wanting to close Carvin's Cove to boaters and fishermen, Kiser has placed a burden on Roanoke city taxpayers. By the time he is through, he will have spent more than $100,000 of the taxpayers' money for a nonexistent threat. What a waste! DONALD E. JOHNSON ROANOKE
