MENTORSHIPS ESTABLISHED
Mentorships for students at the Southwest Virginia Governor's School have been set up with business, industry, health care, governmental and educational institutions throughout the school's coverage area. This first internship program will run from March 12 through May 21, providing students with extended learning experiences in mathematics, science and technology.
"We have almost all students set up now with a mentor," Margaret Duncan, the school's director, told its governing board Tuesday.
Each student will spend three hours on a Tuesday or Friday working with mentors, ranging from faculty members at Virginia Tech to physicians, veterinarians or business people.
The school's staff has had to arrange transportation for students to get to their scheduled workplace each week, and get participation approval from all parents. Each mentor will be asked to evaluate the intern at the end of the program, and the evaluation will be part of the student's grade.
Duncan also reported that Governor's School students will be entering exhibits in a Science Fair this weekend at New River Community College.
Judging will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, with the awards announced Saturday. Winners will go on to a regional science fair at Wytheville Community College April 3, with winners from that moving on to state competition at Old Dominion University in May.
