RELIGION BRIEFS

THE REV. CYNTHIA L. HALE, a former Roanoker, will be the Women's Day speaker on March 14 at High Street Baptist Church, 2302 Florida Ave. N.W. She and the choir of her church she now serves, Ray of Hope Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church in Decatur, Ga., will lead the worship at 10:30 a.m. The choir will perform at 3:30 p.m.

Hale is a graduate of Hollins College and Duke Divinity School. Before starting the Atlanta-area church, she was a prison chaplain in North Carolina and Georgia. She is on several national boards of the Disciples of Christ denomination.

\ BOTETOURT CHURCHES OF THE BRETHREN are sponsoring Sunday night Lenten services. Sunday, the Rev. Dr. Harold S. Moyer will discuss "Growing in Christ" at the Daleville Church on U.S. 220.

The two remaining services will be on March 14, when the Rev. Becky Baile-Crouse speaks at Trinity Church, and on March 21 when the Rev. Richard Gottshall speaks at Mount Bethel Church.

All programs are from 7 to 8 p.m. and include music and a discussion of distinctive Brethren beliefs.

\ A YOUTH CRUSADE FOR CHRIST is planned March 28 at 6 p.m. at Loudon Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Seventh Street and Loudon Avenue Northwest. The Modern Beauticians Club, which is sponsoring the event, is seeking youth choirs to participate.

\ THE REV. ALVORD M. BEARDSLEE, who retires this year from the faculty of Hollins College, will be featured Sunday after a noon potluck luncheon at Trinity Episcopal Church in Buchanan.

Beardslee, who has been chaplain and professor of religion at the college for more than 30 years, will discuss "Images of Christ." The community program is sponsored by Blue Ridge Cluster Ministry that also includes Christ Episcopal Church of Buena Vista.

\ THE REV. E.T. BURTON is observing his 34th anniversary of coming to the Sweet Union Baptist Church pastorate. He will be honored on March 10 and 11 at services at which the Rev. Marvin Fields of Maple Street Church and the Rev. Donald Clayborne of Buchanan will preach respectively at 7:30 p.m.

A banquet to honor Burton will be held March 12 at the church at 6 p.m.

\ THE COMMUNITY MASS CHOIR of HOLLINS will present a concert March 14 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church there. The concert is sponsored by the Missionary Circle.

\ THE FESTIVAL OF PURIM, which commemorates the deliverance of the ancient Jews by the heroism of Queen Esther, will be celebrated Saturday at Temple Emanuel and Beth Israel Synagogue.

This year's celebration will include a concert by the Klezmer Conservatory Band that night at 8 at Temple Emanuel, Brambleton Avenue at Persinger Road Southwest. A nursery will be provided. Call 342-3378 for more information.
