Magnet application deadline is March 12

Roanoke Magnet Schools are accepting applications through March 12 for the 1993-94 school year.

Magnet Schools focus on a particular theme such as aerospace, mathematics, science and technology, in addition to the regular academic curriculum.

Admission is by application only, and tuition is free. Students in all Roanoke Valley localities are eligible for admission.

Participating schools are: Fairview World of Plants and Animals, Fishburn Park WEB, Forest Park New American School, Highland Park Learning Center, Roanoke Academy for Mathematics and Science, Westside School of Performing Arts, Addison Aerospace Magnet Middle School, Madison Learning With Technology and Fleming-Ruffner Learning Center.

Salem starts checking for pet documentation

Salem has started a door-to-door check to ensure that all cats and dogs have had state-mandated rabies shots.

Pet owners are required to show animal control officers each pet's rabies certificate and dog license receipt.

Salem's deadline for dog licenses was Jan. 31.

Hearing set March 15 on New Castle district

NEW CASTLE - A public meeting on a proposal to nominate a historic district in New Castle to the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places will be held March 15 at 7 p.m. at the Craig County Courthouse in New Castle.

The state Department of Historic Resources said the meeting will allow residents to comment on the district, which expands the boundaries of an original courthouse district listed on the Virginia register in 1973.

The historic resources board will consider the proposal April 21 at 10 a.m. in Senate Room A of the General Assembly Building in Richmond.
