HOKIES KNOCK OFF HOLY CROSS 9-2
Virginia Tech got seven runs in the sixth inning Friday to defeat Holy Cross 9-2 in college baseball in Blacksburg.The game, played with wind-chill temperatures in the teens, was tied 2-2 when the Hokies (2-0) mounted their uprising. First baseman Ken Nonamaker slugged a two-run homer and right fielder J.R. Hawkins cracked a three-run double in the inning.
Freshman Scott Crim struck out 11 and scattered six hits in pitching a complete game.
Holy Cross (0-2) got solo home runs from Brian Mirrick and Gerry Powderly.
In Lexington, VMI held off a ninth-inning rally by Bucknell to defeat the Bisons 5-4.
VMI scored a run in the first inning and two in the second on singles by Bill Terry, Louie Napoleon, Jay Robinson and David Groseclose. Warren Williams hit a lead-off double in the fourth that eventually scored the fourth Keydet run and Napoleon doubled in the seventh and was driven in by Groseclose.
Bucknell's Steve Gyimesi hit a two-run home run and Bryan Koch hit a solo homer in the ninth to rally the Bisons. But VMI's Merlin Ikenberry finished off the game to earn his third save.
