UNITAS HAS BYPASS SURGERY

Former Baltimore Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas underwent coronary bypass surgery Saturday at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

Unitas was listed in serious condition, said Linda Anderson, a hospital spokeswoman, which is not unusual following such an operation.

His family said the operation went well and the Hall of Fame quarterback was resting comfortably. Doctors expect Unitas to make a full recovery, his family said in a statement.

Unitas, 60, experienced chest pains and had an abnormal electrocardiogram following knee surgery Friday. He was placed in the cardiac care unit as a precaution.

Unitas, picked by Pittsburgh in the fifth round of the 1955 draft but later cut, was signed by Baltimore off the sandlots. He played for the Colts from 1956 to 1973.

He led the Colts to an overtime victory over the New York Giants in the 1958 NFL title game.
