VA. DISTRICT LEADER IN FORFEITURE FUND

The Eastern District of Virginia led the nation in the amount of funds deposited into the federal asset-forfeiture fund during the first quarter of fiscal 1993, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

The district, made up of the federal courts in Richmond, Alexandria, Norfolk and Newport News, deposited nearly $6.8 million into the fund. Most of the money came from fines and forfeitures connected to prosecutions of procurement fraud.

The federal fiscal year began Oct. 1, 1992.

Federal prosecutors deposit funds derived from criminal activities into the asset-forfeiture fund.

Other large deposits include $5.2 million by the Southern District of Florida, $3.1 million by the Middle District of Florida and $3 million by the Eastern District of Michigan, according to the department's figures.
