RELIGION BRIEFS

THE COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM, an ecumenical project of several Roanoke Valley churches to offer specific services to children and youth, has scheduled monthly training seminars for volunteers through June 7.

Debbie Mooty, coordinator of the project, said the meetings are especially to recruit workers but are open to others seeking training with church-sponsored ministries.

On April 14, "Professional Attitudes and the Volunteer" will be the theme from 6 to 8 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Mountain at Third Southwest. The May 3 meeting, "Working with the Angry Child," will begin at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in downtown Salem. Registration for this session is needed; call 342-3501.

On June 7 at Trinity Church at 7:30, "An Overview of Child Development" is planned at 7:30 p.m.

\ VOLUNTEERS IN MISSION will send four teams this spring and summer to Hayesville, N.C., to build a home for a large family. The program sponsored by United Methodists, is open to others with an interest in exercising ministry through construction skills.

Teams will work in the rural Carolina community May 2-8, May 9-15, June 27 to July 3 and July 25-31.

Participants will pay $125 but some churches are raising part of the funds. Call 989-3335 for more information.

\ AWAKENING, an annual series of Lenten renewal services sponsored by Roanoke area Churches of the Brethren, will feature the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Gibble of Arlington as the preacher this year.

The series will be March 28-31 at Central Church, 416 Church Ave. in downtown Roanoke.

"Brethren as People of the Book" will be the theme of the 7:15 p.m. services. Combined choirs will sing each night, and youth also will participate. Child care will be available.

Gibble was minister of education at Central Church before entering seminary about 30 years ago. He and his wife, Ann, have been co-pastors of the Arlington church since 1985.

\ PRESBYTERIANS FOR HABITAT, a joint project of several Roanoke area congregations to provide new houses for the working poor, will start work on a second house on April 14. The dwelling at 113 Harrison Ave. N.W. is expected to be finished in June.

\ JONATHAN ROMEO, classical guitarist and composer, will present a concert March 21 at 3 p.m. at Fincastle United Methodist Church. He has composed more than 20 works for dance and theater as well as music for orchestra and solo performance. The program is free.

\ THE REV. ANTONIO D. THOMAS, will be installed as pastor of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the church, 1810 Grayson Ave. N.W. Preaching will be the Rev. Dr. David C. Forbes Sr., pastor of Christian Faith Baptist Church of Raleigh, N.C. Music will be by the choir of Peaceful Zion Baptist Church of Martinsville.

The Stewart Jones Ensemble will present a concert Sunday at 4 p.m. at Greater Mount Zion under sponsorship of the Missionary Queen's Committee.

\ GREEN RIDGE BAPTIST CHURCH, 5521 Green Ridge Road N.W., has scheduled revival services Sunday through Wednesday. The Rev. Dr. Gerald Stowe, executive director of Tennessee Baptist Childrens' Homes, Inc. since 1984, will speak.

Before entering family ministry, Stowe served churches in Texas and Tennessee for 25 years.

He will preach on Sunday morning at 8:30 and 11 a.m. and nightly at 7. A nursery will be staffed.

\ FIRST CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST of Buchanan has scheduled a special service March 21 at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev. J.A. Saunders and the choir of Sharon Baptist Church of Stewartsville leading the worship.

\ A MUSIC WORKSHOP, directed by Marjorie Olive of East St. Louis, Ill., will be held Monday through Friday at Maple Street Baptist Church, 902 Fairfax Ave. N.W.

Registration for the Music in Christian Education series will be Sunday and Monday. The cost is $5. Classes will be held weeknights from 6 to 9 and are for choir members and directors. Call 343-3880 for more information.

\ A MUSICAL PROGRAM is planned Sunday at 4 p.m. at St. Matthew's Church of God Apostolic, 1422 Abbott St. N.W. Several choirs will be featured.

\ THE MESSIAH COLLEGE CHOIR of Grantham, Pa., will present a Lenten concert Monday at South Roanoke United Methodist Church, South Jefferson at 24th Street.

Selections from "Requiem" by Faure will be on the program along with anthems that thank and worship God.

The choir is directed by Larry Landis. Members are auditioned from the student body of 2,200.

An offering will be taken.
