Knights of Columbus tourney starts FridayThe 24th annual Knights of Columbus Basketball Tournament, a two-weekend event featuring 32 youth teams in three age divisions, will start Friday at the Roanoke Catholic High School gymnasium.
First-round games will begin at 5 p.m. with the North Roanoke Vikings of the Junior League facing the Franklin County Dairy Queen team. Other Junior League games will have the North Roanoke Celtics playing the Vinton 76ers, 9:15 p.m. Friday; the Vinton Hokies vs. the Knights of Columbus Hawks, noon Saturday; and the North Roanoke Cavaliers vs. the Cave Spring Hawks, 4:45 p.m. Saturday.
Little League play will start Friday at 6:15 p.m. with the Roanoke Catholic Celtics challenging the top-seeded North Roanoke Lakers. Other Little League pairings are: North Roanoke Hornets vs. Burnt Chimney 76ers, 8:15 p.m. Friday; Williamson Road Wahoos vs. North Roanoke Hawks, 8:45 a.m. Saturday; South Salem Maroons vs. Knights of Columbus Bucks, 11 a.m. Saturday; YMCA Lakers vs. Bedford 76ers, 1:15 p.m. Saturday; Glenvar Bulls vs. North Roanoke Tar Heels, 3:30 p.m. Saturday; Cave Spring Lions vs. Cloverdale Bulls, 6 p.m. Saturday; and Vinton Running Rebels vs. Southwest Cavaliers, 8 p.m. Saturday.
The Cave Spring Supersonics, defending Midget League champions, will face a challenge from the Bedford Warriors Friday at 7:15 p.m. Other Midget League contests are: South Salem Orange vs. North Roanoke Bullets, 10 a.m. Saturday; Vinton Cavaliers vs. North Roanoke Bulls, 2:30 p.m. Saturday; and North Roanoke Cavaliers vs. Cloverdale Bulls, 7 p.m. Saturday.
Sunday events will include quarterfinal games starting at 12:30 p.m. and the first round of the 17th annual High School One-on-One Contest.
The tournament will continue March 20 and 21 with semifinals, championships, the cheerleading contest and awards.
More than 400 youths are expected to participate, aided by some 100 adult volunteers. A $1 ticket is good for admission to all games.
13th Crawford tourney scheduled April 23-25
The 13th annual Chance Crawford Slow-Pitch Softball Tournament will be held April 23-25 in Salem.
The tournament, sanctioned by the U.S. Slow-Pitch Softball Association, has two mid-Atlantic berths in each division. Men's classes are: A and open, B, C and D. Women's classes are B and C. There also will be a men's recreational division.
The entry fee is $95 for sanctioned teams and $115 for non-sanctioned teams. Only the first 210 teams will be accepted.
Entry deadline is April 9.

Karate student earns 1st-degree black belt
Shane Warner, 17-year-old son of Richard and Cassie Warner of Vinton, has received a first-degree black belt from the Roanoke Shao Lin Karate Club after six years of study.
Warner is a senior at William Byrd High School.
