TOM BERENGER TO SPEAK AT VMI
Academy Award nominee Tom Berenger will visit Lexington and speak at Virginia Military Institute's Jackson Memorial Hall tonight at 8 p.m.Berenger, star of films like "Platoon," "The Big Chill" and "Major League," will speak on the making of "Gettysburg," filmed last summer for Turner Productions.
In the movie, based on Michael Shaara's "Killer Angels," Berenger plays Confederate Gen. James Longstreet.
Berenger is encouraging support for the Longstreet Memorial, a project that has been approved for the Gettysburg battlefield. The memorial will be an equestrian statue done by Gary Casteel, an artist from Mauertown. Casteel also will speak during tonight's program.
Arrangements for the speaking engagement are being handled by Lt. Col. Keith Gibson, executive director of VMI's Museum Programs. Gibson served as historical adviser for the screenplay.
The event is free and open to the public.
