WORKING CLASSES ARE EASIER TO TAX
HEADLINE: President Clinton proposes a high income tax on the rich. Hurrah! He's going to do something that no one else has had any success doing.Usually people don't get rich and stay rich by paying enormous income taxes. They find as many loopholes as there are holes in a grapefruit sack. Three-fourths of income taxes are, and will be, paid by the people carrying their lunch buckets and who have little defense.
The poor and middle-income people pay most of the taxes because it's easy to collect. Push a computer button, bang! They got you.
Collecting income taxes from the rich is not that easy. I know of no one on the scene that can correct the mess we are in; we have waited too long. It's easier to kill a young lion cub than to kill an adult one.
We are told the economy is on the upswing. I wonder if the tens of thousands who have lost their jobs think that. As for balancing the national budget, forget it. If it ever happens, it's far in the future. As for Clinton, I feel his popularity will fade and he'll never set foot in the White House for a second term. EDWIN R. ROBERTSON PEARISBURG
