SOCCER PLAYERS TO GO TO RHODE ISLAND
Soccer players Joel Young and Chad Floyd of Radford High School will participate in the World Scholar-Athlete Games in Rhode Island this summer.Young has been an All-New River District and All-Region IV selection the last two seasons. This year, he has been honored as an ambassador at the HOBY Leadership Conference, was a representtive on the Youth Alcohol and Drug Prevention Project, serves as president of the student body and is captain of the Bobcats' soccer squad.
Floyd was named all-district and all-region last year and was honorable mention all state.
He is an honor-roll student and vice president of the senior class.
The World Scholar-Athlete Games were conceived and organized by the Institute for International Sport to promote understanding, acceptance and friendship among the youth of the world.
Participants range from 16-19 years of age and are selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership qualities and the level of accomplishment in their sport or artistic medium.
This year's games will be June 20-July 1 at Newport, R.I., and the University of Rhode Island.
More than 2,000 athletes from all 50 states and 100 countries are expected to participate.
