25-YEAR TERM GIVEN IN BREAK-IN, SHOOTING INCIDENT
A Christiansburg man was sentenced to serve 25 years in prison after pleading guilty Friday to shooting at his ex-girlfriend and her father in December 1991.Randolph William Woolwine, 26, of Starlight Drive pleaded guilty to breaking into the home of Edward Lewis Duncan in the Walton community, attempted malicious wounding of Duncan, and malicious wounding of Maria Ann Duncan. He also pleaded guilty to two charges of using a firearm to commit a felony and to shooting into an occupied dwelling.
Montgomery County Circuit Judge Kenneth Devore imposed a 40-year sentence for the six charges. He ordered that Woolwine serve 25 years, with the remaining 15 years suspended. Woolwine will be put on probation for 10 years.
Commonwealth's Attorney Phil Keith said Woolwine went to the Duncan home on Dec. 9, 1991, and entered through the front door without permission. Woolwine had a gun and fired a shot in Edward Duncan's direction as Duncan attempted to use the telephone to dial the sheriff's office.
Woolwine then pointed the pistol at Maria Duncan. When she fled, he shot through the bedroom door and through a closet she was hiding in, Keith said.
Maria Duncan was hit twice, once in each arm. She was treated at Radford Community Hospital and released. Her father was not injured.
Edward Duncan and another man managed to get the gun away from Woolwine, and he ran toward Virginia 114, Keith said.
A state police tracking dog was used to search for the man, but was unsuccessful because of the wet weather. Woolwine was arrested the next day while trying to check himself into St. Albans Psychiatric Hospital in Radford.
