Stephenson heads Shenandoah Life boardShenandoah Life Insurance Co.'s board of directors has elected JOSEPH E. STEPHENSON chairman. Stephenson is president and chief executive officer of the company.
Before being named president in 1989, Stephenson worked as executive vice president and vice president of marketing of the company. He was a general agent with Shenandoah Life for six years before that. Stephenson has been a company director since his appointment as executive vice president in 1988.
ACCOUNTING
DIXON LOW has joined the accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick as a director in the tax department. Formerly director of the Roanoke tax practice of Coopers & Lybrand, he will oversee the provision of tax services to the firm's business clients. He has 14 years' experience and specializes in corporate taxation, especially mergers and acquisitions.
BANKING
Charter Federal Savings Bank in Bristol, Va., has announced the appointment of CECIL R. McCULLAR as president and chief executive officer to succeed E.L. BYINGTON JR., who has been named chairman emeritus and will remain on the board of directors.
McCullar worked most recently as retail executive officer of Dominion Bank with responsibility for the Southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee regions.
He attended the College of William and Mary and has completed graduate or professional courses at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University and at the University of Virginia. His banking experience includes personnel development and training and more recently credit administration and business development at the regional level.
Byington has had a career with Charter Federal that has spanned over four decades. Under his leadership, the savings bank grew from $15 million to $740 million in assets and operations that include 26 branches from Knoxville to Roanoke. He will retain an active role in assisting in the transition to new management.
HOTELS
JOY M. SMITH has been named director of sales for the Radisson Patrick Henry Hotel in downtown Roanoke.
MEDIA
HELEN BURNETT has been named circulation director of the Roanoke Times & World-News. She will supervise the circulation department's sales efforts in home-delivery subscriptions and single-copy sales, oversee delivery and ensure the profitability of Pinpoint Target Marketing, an alternative delivery service of the newspaper.
An employee since 1981, Burnett has worked as co-op manager, Neighbors advertising manager, New River advertising manager, sales development manager and retail manager.
She succeeds DEE CARPENTER, who will become circulation director of The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star in Norfolk.
\ DON PORTERFIELD has been promoted to retail advertising manager. Porterfield joined the Roanoke Times & World-News in 1990 as sales development and training manager. In his new position, he will be responsible for all retail advertising and will coordinate efforts between the sales and production staffs.
MEDICINE
The Lewis-Gale Hospital medical staff has elected the following officers: president, THOMAS M. WINN JR., M.D., obstetrician and gynecologist associated with Jennings, Winn and Forth, P.C.; vice president, DOUGLAS W. KIRTLEY, M.D., gastroenterologist with Lewis-Gale Clinic; and secretary-treasurer, NELSON B. GREENE, M.D., pulmonologist with Lewis-Gale Clinic.

TIMOTHY GARRISON, general sales manager for Boone & Co., and president-elect of the Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors, has received the Professional Standards and Code of Ethics award from the association. As chairman of the standard forms and stellar committees, Garrison has taught ethics to new agents at Boone & Co., worked to prepare a standard contract and purchase form used by area real estate firms and worked to develop and interpret the Roanoke Valley purchase agreement.
RETAIL
\ DANIEL D. BRAMOS has been appointed regional sales manager for Virginia Region of Solon Automated Services, a supplier of coin-operated laundry equipment. Bramos is the former president of Montpelier Group, a real estate marketing, management and consulting firm. He also worked as executive vice president for Amurcon Corp. of Virginia for 11 1/2 years.
WOOD PRODUCTS\ BRUCE CODY, founder and business manager of Architectural Wood in Roanoke, has been elected president of the Virginia chapter of the Architectural Woodwork Institute.
\ BRYAN WILKINSON has been named project manager for contracts in Virginia and North Carolina for Architectural Wood in Roanoke. An employee since 1987, he is currently working on a project for the Library of Congress.
Also, MIKE REYNOLDS of Salem has joined the firm as an estimator. He most recently worked for the contractor sales division of Moore's.
