NEW FISH SPECIES FOUND IN MARYLAND
A new species of freshwater fish has been discovered in streams that feed into the Potomac River in western Maryland, state officials said. The strange-looking member of the sculpin family, a fish with a big, flat head and upward-gazing eyes, was found by Frostburg State University biologist Richard Raesly. The fish had earlier been mistaken for the slimy sculpin, a distant relative.
Sculpins are among the toughest freshwater fish in North America to identify because a microscope is needed to tell them apart. Earlier researchers had found an "undescribed species" in the creeks along the Potomac.
