HOMER BOWERS, 71, MAYOR'S FATHER, DIES

Homer A. Bowers, father of Roanoke Mayor David Bowers, died at his home Sunday of a heart attack.

David Bowers described his father, 71, as a family man and patriot.

"He loved my mama and that was really his life," David Bowers said. "He was active right up to the end."

His six children went on to professions in business, teaching and law.

Born in Davidson County, N.C., Homer Bowers served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He remained active in veterans affairs as a member of the American Legion Post No. 3 in Salem.

He worked as a truck driver and route supervisor for Merita Bakery, where he retired a decade ago. After his retirement, he worked part-time and enjoyed following the NASCAR circuit races, the mayor said.

Bowers is survived by his wife, Mary A. Bowers of Roanoke; four sons, David Bowers of Roanoke, Rob Bowers of Roanoke, Paul Bowers of Richmond, and Tom Bowers of Buies Creek, N.C.; two daughters, Bonnie Bowers Kling of Hot Springs and Lynn Bowers of Richmond; and three grandchildren.
