BUSINESSES TO HONOR SHAWSVILLE SCHOLARS

The Lewis-Gale Clinic and other local businesses are working with SHAWSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL to give a bonus to honor roll students. The program, called "Students Making Achievement Real Today" - SMART - awards academic and service achievements of high-school students.

This is how the program works:

Students who make the honor roll receive identification cards that allow them to get discounts in over 50 stores. The ID card contains the student's name and picture, just like a drivers license, and is good for a semester.

There are two cards for which students can qualify. A Gold Card is for students on the A or AB honor roll for the semester, and who also have completed eight hours of community service per month.

A Silver Card is for students on the A or A-B honor roll or who have improved in at least two subjects over the previous semester with no failing grades.

Shawsville High School is one of 14 schools participating in the SMART program.

The BLACKSBURG NEW SCHOOL will hold an open house Wednesday and Thursday from a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Visitors can observe classes, meet teachers, speak with parent representatives and obtain written information on the school.

The school, a parent-teacher cooperative, is located at 1600 Whipple Drive. For further information, call 552-6693 or 552-8335.

April Corvin has been elected president of the PULASKI COUNTY High School Players, succeeding Courtney Crockett.

Vice presidents are Aaron Parks and Damien Lorenz; secretaries, Sandra Rapp and Shawn Faulkner; treasurers, Ellen DeHaven and Bobby Petty, and alternate, Kat Norris.

The RADFORD HIGH SCHOOL concert choir is sponsoring a festival of choirs Saturday, March 20, at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. The concert will feature various community, gospel, youth and high school choirs from the New River Valley.

Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students. Children under 12 are admitted free.

Proceeds from the concert will go toward the concert choir cultural exchange with Laurier Secondary School of London in Ontario.

For further information, call Lois Castonguay at 639-0430.

A four-hour EARLY RELEASE is scheduled for Thursday for students in Giles County. The afternoon will be used by teachers for parent-teacher conferences and other staff activities.

The CHRISTIANSBURG HIGH SCHOOL Demon Booster Club will honor its winter athletes at a sports awards program Wednesday March 17 at 7 p.m. The event will be held in the auditorium, followed by refreshments.

If you're like most other high school students, SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT TESTS are loathsome things that cause ulcers and all sorts of other discomforts. To make matters worse, you can't study for these things.

But the Stanley H. Kaplan company is coming to the rescue. Tonight at 7:30, at Blacksburg High School, there will be a free compact course on SATs to help prepare students for the May 1 SAT.

The mini-course will give you an overview of SAT preparation, but if you would like to prepare further, check out a 6-week course offered by Kaplan.

The course will be held at the Blacksburg Jewish Community Center beginning Sunday and continuing through April 28. The course covers all areas of the SAT.

For further information, call (800) KAP-TEST (527-8378).
