OBIT FERET, PETER PAUL

FERET, Peter Paul, 48, of Blacksburg, a professor in the Forestry Department of VA Tech, died Saturday, March 13, 1993 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was a native of Cornwall, New York, born May 18, 1944. He joined the Department of Forestry faculty at Virginia Tech in 1970 after earning a Ph.D. in plant breeding and plant genetics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He had been instrumental in preparing documentation necessary for the formation of the new College of Forestry and Wildlife Resources at Virginia Tech. Prior to joining its faculty he had graduated cua laude from SUNY College of Forestry, Syracuse. He was a member of the Society of American Foresters, American Forestry Association, Virginia Forestry Association, and the International Society of Arboriculture. His education and career was distinguished by awards from numerous forestry and education organizations including Gamma Sigma Delta, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Xi Sigma Pi, and the Robin Hood Junior Honorary Society. Dr. Feret is survived by his wife, Alice J. Feret; two sons, Peter N. Feret and Matthew P. Feret, both of Blacksburg; one daughter, Andrea J. Feret, Blacksburg; parents, Stanley M. and Dorothy Feret, Bedford, New York; one sister, Nancy McNulty, Red Bank, N.J.; one brother, Leo Feret, Ancram, N.Y.; mother and father-in-law, Alice B. and Nicholas A. Rigas, Flemington, N.J.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Carole E. and Lewis Rumpf, Ridgefield, Conn.; seven nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 18, 11:30 a.m. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church. The Rev. Gary Schroeder will officiate. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. Flowers may be sent in remembrance, or donations may be made to the Forestry Faculty Scholarship. Scholarship contributions made out the the Virginia Tech Foundation may be sent directly to David Wm. Smith, College of Forestry and Wildlife Resources, Blacksburg, Va. 24061-0324. The family will receive friends at McCoy Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 17, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
