OBIT BANE, EUGENE MILLER SR.
BANE, Eugene Miller Sr., ("Gene"), 82 of Grundy, died March 13, 1993. He
was taken by God to be his Jester. He was born in White Gate, Va., January 18,
1911, and died from a sudden heart attack. He attended Roanoke College, was a
member of White Gate Baptist Church and was president of the following
corporations: D. J. B. Colleries, Flannery Coal and Land Company, Black Hawk
Coal Company, Continental Coal Company and several others. He was a member of
the U. S. Chamber of Commerce, the University Club of Bluefield, the
Independent Coal Operators Association and the Grundy Kiwanis Club. He served
as sergeant in the C.C.C. and served on the board of directors or board of
trustees of the following organizations: Pikeville National Bank, Roanoke
College, Emory and Henry College, Pikeville College, Maryville College,
Hiwassee College, the Virginia Masonic Home in Richmond, the Buchanan General
Hospital in Grundy and was former president of the American Cancer Society
(Buchanan County Chapter). He was a past president and served on the board of
directors of the Bluefield A.A.A. and served as leader in many Masonic
organizations. He was Past Potentate of Kazim Temple, past president of the
Mid-Atlantic Shrine Association, served as director of the Royal Order of
Jesters in 1978, former Worthy Grand Patron of the Eastern Star in Virginia,
Master and Secretary of Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge No. 17 in Grundy, was a
33rd Degree Mason, a Kentucky Colonel and received the Silver Beaver Award
from the Boys Scouts of America. He was a former elected member of the Town
Council of Grundy and formerly served as highway commissioner for the Bristol
District with the Virginia Department of Transportation. He is survived by his
loving wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Richardson Bane of Grundy and Salem;
daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Dr. Mac Stanley of Roanoke; son and
daughter-in-law, Dr. Eugene M. Jr. and Becky Bane, Salem; daughter, Barbara
Grace Bane, Abingdon; six grandchildren, Michelle Foss, Mike Worley, Beth
Worley, Katye Bane, Eugene M. (Ember) Bane III, Anne Bane; two
great-grandchildren, Erik Foss, Kaya Foss; one brother, William Doak Bane,
Pearisburg. He was preceded in death by his son, William Davidson Bane, two
brothers, and one sister. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's
Roanoke Chapel 3 p.m. Tuesday with burial in Sherwood Memorial Park with
graveside Masonic services. A memorial service will be held at a later date in
Grundy. He will be sorely missed for his good humor, friendly ways and his
generosity (he never met a stranger). The family suggests memorials be made to
Mountain Mission School, Grundy, Va. 24614 or the American Heart Association.
Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel where the family will receive
friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday.
