OBIT COMPTON, JAMES WOHLFORD
COMPTON, James Wohlford, ("Jim"), 81, of 700 Spring Garden Dr., Bluefield,
W.Va. died Friday in a Bluefield, W.Va. hospital. Born in Rocky Gap, he was
the son of the late Robert Frazier Compton and Sarah Kate Elizabeth Wohlford
Compton. He was a former superintendent for Appalachian Power Company retiring
after 20 years of service, and former president/owner of the Bluefield Retread
Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He attended Bluefield
College and was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was a member
of the First Christian Church of Bluefield. He served as both deacon and elder
of the church, was a charter member and past president of the South Bluefield
Kiwanis Club, and was the Kiwanian of the year two times. He was a member of
the American Legion, Society of Professional Engineers and the Bluefield
Country Club. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Farris
Compton and and two brothers, Joseph Frazier Compton, Beauford Gregory
Compton. Surviving are his wife, Meri-Louise Bailey Compton, Bluefield, W.Va.;
three nieces and one nephew. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 3
p.m. from the First Christian Church with the Rev. C. Michael Cunningham and
Dr. W.D. Hasty Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial
Gardens at Princeton. Friends may call at the church from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30
p.m. Wednesday. The family suggest memorial contributions be made to the First
Christian Church Memorial Fund or to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial
Fund. Mercer Funeral Home of Bluefield, W.Va. is in charge of arrangements.
