WIFE OF FORMER GRUMMAN HEAD DIES IN ARUBA

Patricia Bruns, a former Roanoke nurse, was killed and her husband, former Grumman Emergency Products President William Bruns, was injured in a two-car accident in Aruba on Saturday.

The couple was on the Caribbean island for the annual meeting of the Fire Apparatus Manufacturers Association. Bruns, president of the organization, has been vice president for sales and marketing of Simon Ladder Towers Inc. of Ephrata, Pa., since last May.

Patricia Bruns, a former registered nurse at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley, was 40.

Her husband suffered fractured ribs and had liver surgery to repair injuries caused by the accident, Aruba police officer Loef Stop told the Lancaster, Pa., Intelligencer Journal. He said Bruns was in stable condition Sunday in an Orangestad, Aruba, hospital.

Funeral arrangements have not been made for Patricia Bruns, according to Deborah Schweitzer, human resources director at Simon Ladder Towers.

Stop said William Bruns was driving a rental car through a crossroads at 10 mph when an oncoming motorist traveling 60 mph crashed into its side.

He said police will recommend that the other driver be charged for "driving irresponsibly."

William Bruns, who is 51, was with Grumman Corp. for 26 years, the last 10 in Roanoke, when the aerospace company decided to close its fire engine plant. He joined a competing company before the Roanoke.
