MONEY MISSING AT CIVIC CENTER
Two Roanoke Civic Center employees have been suspended with pay after $7,089 was discovered missing from the box office. The shortage was discovered March 8 when the civic center officials were balancing books from a Jan. 22 concert by the country band Alabama.
City Manager Bob Herbert declined further comment until separate internal and police investigations are completed.
"The good news is that through our record-keeping procedures the apparent shortage was discovered," Herbert said in prepared statement.
Herbert said he could not reveal the names of the suspended employees unless formal charges are filed.
Civic center officials contacted the municipal auditor immediately after the money was discovered missing.
"In addition to the investigation," Herbert said, "we will be working to see if there are any procedures that might need to be changed to help prevent such an occurrence in the future."
Civic Center Manager Bob Chapman declined to discuss the status of the two suspended employees.
"At this time I've got no comment on that because it does concern a personnel matter," he said.
