BEEF INDUSTRY HONORS PULASKI FARM MANAGER
Tim Sutphin, manager of the Simmons Farm in Pulaski for the past 11 years, was named the 1993 Virginia Commercial Producer of the Year last month at the Virginia Beef Industry convention in Roanoke.Sutphin, a Pulaski County native and animal science graduate of Virginia Tech, manages an operation of 1,300 acres in three counties with a cattle herd of 240 females calving in the spring and fall and 200 feeder cattle, which are grazed along with the calves.
Sutphin has served on the boards of directors of the Wytheville Feeder Cattle Association, the Virginia Cattlemen's Association, the Eastern Lamb Producers Cooperative, the Virginia Sheep Federation and the Virginia-North Carolina Wool Marketing Association.
Also, Sutphin has served as chairman of the New River Valley Fair Sheep Show and has worked with the educational and service programs of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine for the last 11 years.
Sutphin and his wife, Cathy, have been strong supporters of 4-H programs in Pulaski County and the surrounding area. They have two daughters.
Also honored at the convention were Dwight Houff of Mount Sidney, who was named the Allen K. Randolph Cattleman of the Year, and Richard S. Ellis IV, recipient of the beef industry service award.
Houff is a 1961 graduate of Virginia Tech and Ellis graduated from Tech in 1953.
A 1964 Virginia Tech graduate, Randall Updike of Washington, Va., received the improvement association superior service award. Updike is a marketing and sale representative with the Virginia Department of Agriculture.
