Teams of 5 sought to take LUV Challenge

Monday is the registration deadline for the third annual Lighten Up Valley Challenge, sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Alive and Well Coalition.

The LUV Challenge is a four-week weight-loss contest in which teams of five compete to lose weight sensibly while learning about the roles of exercise and proper nutrition in a healthy lifestyle.

Participants may win prizes of up to $500.

Interest survey planned for Chapter 1 preschool

The Chapter 1 program of Roanoke public schools is conducting an interest survey for the 1993-94 preschool program for 4-year-olds.

Information brochures will be available March 25 and 26 during school hours at all Chapter 1 elementary schools. They are: Fallon Park, Forest Park, Hurt Park, Lincoln Terrace, Morningside, Preston Park, Roanoke Academy for Math and Science, Virginia Heights Annex at Highland Park, and Westside.

Interested families of children who will be 4 years old on or before Sept. 30 are asked to pick up the information, complete the survey and return it to the school where their children most likely will attend kindergarten.

MDA raises $6,000 in Feb. fund-raiser

The Muscular Dystrophy Association of Southwest Virginia raised $6,000 in pledges during the 1993 Roanoke MDA Lockup, held despite the snow Feb. 25 in the City Market Building.

Richard Brown of General Motors Acceptance Corp. was the top fund-raiser.

All money collected from the lockup will be used to provide patient services to the people served by MDA of Southwest Virginia.

Older Worker of Year nominations sought

The League of Older Americans Area Agency on Aging is seeking nominations for the Roanoke Valley Older Worker of the Year award.

Each year the agency recognizes older workers for outstanding service to their employers.

Employers may nominate any current worker who is at least 55 years old. Nominations must be postmarked no later than April 1 and must include a $10 fee, which covers lunch for one employer representative and the nominee.

The awards ceremony and luncheon will be held April 23 at 12:30 p.m. at Crossroads Mall, in conjunction with the Older Worker Job Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mountain View pupils hold phone book drive

Pupils at Mountain View Elementary School will hold their annual telephone book recycling drive again this year.

C&P Telephone will distribute new directories later this month, and pupils ask customers to take their old telephone books to the school, at 5901 Plantation Circle, before April 30.

To arrange for pickup of large numbers of telephone books, call 561-8175.

Mountain View pupils have recycled more than 30,000 telephone books in the three years they have sponsored the program.

Mental health alliance presents awards

The Roanoke Valley chapter of the Alliance for the Mentally Ill presented awards at its recent annual meeting.

Roanokers for Mental Health Equity, a coalition of mental health professional and advocacy organizations, was recognized for its efforts to educate the public about mental health insurance issues.

Opal Bland received the Outstanding Consumer Service award for her efforts in forming the Roanoke chapter of the Virginia Mental Health Consumers Association.

Helen Franklin was honored for Outstanding Volunteer Service for contributing her time and business to educate the public about mental illness.

Diane Kelly received an award for Outstanding Community Service for her role in establishing three support groups for the mentally ill and their families. The groups are Parents and Children Coping Together, the Roanoke Valley Depressive Disorders Association and the Roanoke chapter of the Virginia Mental Health Consumers Association.

The Alliance's newly elected officers are: Nancy Canova, president; June Poe, vice president; Reba Carter, secretary; and Warren Simpson, treasurer.
