OHIO NORTHERN HOLDS ON FOR DIVISION III TITLE 17-68
D'Artis Jones and Mark Gooden scored 21 points each and Ohio Northern staved off a furious Augustana rally to win its first NCAA Division III men's basketball championship, 71-68 Saturday night.Aaron Madry added 14 points for Ohio Northern (28-2).
Kirk Anderson led Augustana (24-7) with 20 points, and Aben Cooper had 17 points and 11 rebounds.
With Ohio Northern leading 66-54 with 2:30 remaining, Augustana went on an 11-1 run, closing to two points down with 54 seconds left. Anderson led the rally with three 3-pointers.
Gooden then sank four consecutive free throws as Ohio Northern rebuilt its lead to 71-65 with 13 seconds left. Mike Radue's 3-pointer for Augustana with three seconds left accounted for the final points.
Ohio Northern's defense held the Vikings to 39.4 percent shooting. Augustana led twice, the last time at 5-4.
Ohio Northern had its first significant run nine minutes into the game. The Polar Bears went on a 14-3 spurt to take a 32-18 with five minutes left in the half, and they led 41-31 at halftime.
In the game for third place, Rowan defeated Massachusetts-Dartmouth 95-74.
