MCDONALD'S TO CLOSE LAST OF ORIGINAL CAFES

The last of the original McDonald's restaurants is a victim of the chain's success.

The burger stand with its two giant arches has been open for 40 years, but it's too small to modernize, so McDonald's Corp. is closing it. While some others are still standing, it's the only restaurant from the original McDonald brothers' chain still open to serve burgers and fries.

The restaurant 15 miles southeast of Los Angeles is losing thousands of dollars, said Anita Faunce, a company spokeswoman.

City officials and the Los Angeles Conservancy said they still hope the restaurant can be saved.

"It's a cultural icon, not just for Southern California but the rest of the country," said Pete Moruzzi, chairman of the conservancy's Modern and Post World War II Committee.
