TEACHER OF THE WEEK
Give Yvonne Wimmer a good book and a baby who wants to be rocked, and she's in heaven.Wimmer's love of children extends all the way down to the tiniest of them. A single foster mother, she keeps newborn infants waiting to be adopted in her home.
At school, she's taught elementary pupils for 22 years. And what she enjoys teaching them the most is reading, her own hobby. "I want my children not to endure reading as a subject, but to develop a love of it that will last from now on," she said.
"Mrs. Wimmer explains everything we need to learn so we can understand it," said her nominator. Wimmer said she has high expectations for her Roanoke County pupils. "It doesn't matter whether they get an A or a C, I want them to give it their best, to get their own personal satisfaction," she said.
Wimmer spends her spare time redecorating her house and with her family. She is the nursery coordinator for her church and enjoys music and playing the piano.
