`ODYSSEY OF MIND' CONTEST COMPLETED
Odyssey of the Mind competition was completed during the weekend at schools in Marion for Southwest Virginia schools.Teams tackled various kinds of problems in each category, ranging from designing and building a vehicle powered by mechanical jacks ("Pit Stop") to creating a performance based on a Hemingway book ("The Old Man and the Sea").
First- and second-place winners, in order, were:
"The Old Man and the Sea": Division I, Chilhowie Elementary School, Smyth County, and Graham Intermediate School, Tazewell County; Division II, Scott Memorial Elementary, Wythe, and Jonesville Middle School (Team A), Lee; Division III, J.J. Kelly High, Wise, and Richlands High, Tazewell;
"Pit Stop": Division II, Marion Middle, Smyth, and Richlands Middle, Tazewell; Division III, George Wythe High, Wythe, and Marion Senior High, Smyth;
"Which End Is Up?": Division I, Richlands Elementary, Tazewell, and Chilhowie Elementary, Smyth; Division II, Marion Middle, Smyth, and Richlands Middle, Tazewell; Division III, Richlands High, Tazewell, Chilhowie High, Smyth;
"Dinosaurs": Division I, Cedar Bluff Elementary in Tazewell and Spiller Primary in Wythe, first-place tie, and Saint Paul Elementary, Wise; Division II, Scott Memorial Elementary, Wythe, and Richlands Middle, Tazewell; Division III, Clintwood High School, Dickenson;
"Folk Tales": Division I, Powell Valley Middle, Wise, and Richlands Elementary, Tazewell; Division II, Woodlawn Intermediate, Carroll, and Scott Memorial, Wythe.
First-place winners in each division will go on to state finals April 24 at John Handley High School in Winchester.
Creativity awards went to Scott Memorial in the "Dinosaurs" category, J.J. Kelly High in "Old Man and the Sea," Saint Paul Elementary and Jonesville Middle (Team B) in "Which End Is Up?," Woodlawn Elementary (Team B) in "Folk Tales," and spontaneous creativity awards to Cedar Bluff Elementary (student Jason Gilbert), Woodlawn Elementary (Team C) and Clintwood High in "Old Man and the Sea."
