HAWAII PACIFIC CLAIMS NAIA TITLE

Keeping it simple proved the winning formula for Hawaii Pacific, which won the first national basketball championship by any Hawaiian team the hardest way possible - without its star player.

With leading scorer and rebounder Roger Huggins on the bench with a leg injury Monday night, the Sea Warriors (30-4) got 24 points from Lemar Young and four high-pressure free throws from David Smith to beat top-seeded Oklahoma Baptist 88-83 in the title game of the NAIA tournament.

Darrell Barnett had 19 points for the Bison (34-3).
