INDIANS PITCHER KILLED

Cleveland Indians pitcher Steve Olin was killed and two teammates were seriously injured Monday night when their 18-foot fishing boat crashed into a dock during a break from spring training.

The club confirmed the death of the 27-year-old relief ace and Olin injuries to two other pitchers - Tim Crews and Bob Ojeda.

Officer Susan Mock of the Lake County Sheriff's Department said one player was killed instantly, although she would not disclose his identity.

The accident happened at 7:30 p.m. in the central Florida town on the Indians' only scheduled day off of spring training.

Crews, 31, has an injured lung and a "very serious head injury," said Joe Brown, a spokesman at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Crews is in the intensive care unit.

Ojeda, 35, underwent surgery and is in stable but serious condition, said Elaine Beebe, nursing supervisor at South Lake Memorial Hospital in Clermont. The nature of his injury was not disclosed.

Mock said the boat hit a dock that extended into Little Lake Nellie, south of Clermont.

The last active major-leaguer killed in an accident was Thurman Munson of the New York Yankees in a 1979 plane crash.
