K of C youth tourney resumes this weekend

The Knights of Columbus 24th annual youth basketball tournaments will continue Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. in the Roanoke Catholic High School gym.

In first-round action, all top-seeded teams in the Junior League advanced. In the second round, the Vinton Hokies will play the North Roanoke Celtics at 2 p.m. Saturday, and the North Roanoke Vikings will play the North Roanoke Cavaliers at 5:45. The winners will play for the title Sunday at 5 p.m.

In Little League play, the No. 1 seeded North Roanoke Lakers will take on the North Roanoke Hornets Saturday at 9 a.m., the Williamson Road Wahoos will play the South Salem Maroons at 10, the Bedford 76ers will play the North Roanoke Tar Heels at 11, and the Cloverdale Bulls will play the Vinton Running Rebels at noon. Semifinals will be played at 4:15 and 7 p.m., and the championship match will be Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Midget League defending champion Cave Spring Supersonics advanced to semifinal play and will take on the North Roanoke Bullets at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Vinton Cavaliers will play the North Roanoke Cavaliers at 3:15. The championship game will be Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

The high school One-on-One Contest second round at 5:15 p.m. Saturday will see Shannon Taylor of Patrick Henry vs. Matt Matheny of Cave Spring; Kevin Garst of Salem vs. Donnie Childress of William Byrd; David Robertson of William Byrd vs. Robbie Hibbs of Cave Spring; and Mark Byington of Salem vs. Shannon Williams of Lord Botetourt. Semifinals will be played at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, and the championship match will be at 3 p.m.

8K, 1-miler set Sunday at Victory Stadium

The Doctor's Day 8K and One Mile Fun Run/Walk will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Victory Stadium.

The race is sponsored by the Roanoke Academy of Medicine Auxiliary to benefit its scholarship fund for students pursuing health-related careers.

Registration and packet pickup will be held Saturday from 1:30-5 p.m. at Martin Travel at Towers Shopping Center.

The 8K entry fee will be $15; for the one-mile event, fees will be $4 for adults and $2 for children ages 15 and under. Race-day registration for the 8K will be $20.

Children's golf clinic needs adult sponsors

Sponsors are needed for the "Hook-A-Kid-On-Golf" program, which will be held June 21-25 at Hanging Rock Golf Club.

Children ages 8-14 will have the opportunity to learn about golf in an effort toward keeping them away from drugs and alcohol.

Each sponsorship of $100 will allow a child to attend the daily sessions, which include golf instruction and lectures on etiquette, rules, drug awareness and careers in golf. Participants also will receive a starter set of clubs, golf bag, shirt and other accessories.
