CRACKING WISE: Dave Barry, the syndicated humor columnist, will speak Monday night at 8 in Burruss Auditorium at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.Barry's impudent outrageousness about . . . everything . . . has made him a top-selling author. Exploding cows and flatulent politicians are but two of his favorite subjects. Others occupy a similar plane.

You may also charge them by calling 231-5615 or (800) 843-0332.\ \ WHAT DAVE COULD DO WITH THIS: "The Wonderful World of Horses," starring the Royal Lipizzaner Stallions, will come to the Roanoke Civic Center for performances Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m.
Included will be "Airs Above the Ground," a segment consisting of leaps and maneuvers once used by riders to protect and defend themselves on the battlefield.
Tickets are $12.50 for adults, with $2 off for children age 12 and under and seniors age 60 and over. A limited number of VIP seats will sell for $15.50.

Dance Magazine has said L.D. Burris "embodies African roots in contemporary America." The Ways and Means, for its part, touches on such topics as male-female relationships, the creative process and dancing to music regarded as undanceable.

For information, call 362-6596.\ \ AND ESPECIALLY THIS: Rattlesnakes, copperheads, pythons and rat snakes, iguanas, lizards and the like will have the run of the Science Museum of Western Virginia on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the annual Reptile Expo.
Members of herpetological societies and other experts will discuss these things as well as show slides and videos of them. There will be children's workshops, the ongoing dinosaur exhibit and more. Call 342-5718 for more information.\ \ LOST AND FOUND: Missing from its first performance in 1880 until its discovery in 1951, Giacomo Puccini's "Messa Di Gloria" will be performed Sunday afternoon at 4 at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church in Roanoke.
The piece, composed when Puccini was a mere 18, will feature Joe Gaskey, tenor; Robert Snead, baritone; and Frank Morris, bass, plus a chorus and orchestra conducted by Richard Cummins.
Like most of Puccini's works, this one has melodies that touch the heart. Admission is free. Call 344-6225.\ \ PICK A PIECE: The Free Clinic of the New River Valley will have its annual art auction Saturday night at the Blacksburg Holiday Inn.
Viewing and the silent auction will begin at 6, open bidding at 7:30. Admission is $6 per person or $10 per couple.\ \ IN THE VANGUARD: Jazz, rock, folk and psychedelic music will have their moments in Saturday night's concert at the Ellington Playhouse in Lynchburg.
Cosmology and two of its spinoff bands, TR3 and the John D'earth Quartet, will play in a show that starts at 9 o'clock. Doors will open at 8. Tickets are $12.50 for the general public.

Like Shakespeare's original actors, the cast of 12 doubles its parts and uses edited scripts. It also incorporates a lot of humor to make an entertaining evening of it.\ \ TIME-TESTED: "Down Memory Lane" is the theme of the Botetourt County Chorus's 15th anniversary show. It will be tonight and Saturday night at 8 at Lord Botetourt High School.
Tickets are $3 for adults and $1 for children.\ \ FOLKS: Trapezoid, the acclaimed folk music ensemble, will present a concert Saturday night at 7:30 at the Reynolds Homestead in Critz.
